Services
Refuse and recycling
Westmorland and Furness Council is responsible for rubbish collection: phone 0300 373 3300 or contact on-line if any problems. The service is being revised, but at the moment:
- Non-recyclable rubbish is collected early on Thursday mornings. It should be put on the kerbside in the Council’s blue plastic bags after 5.30pm on Wednesdays. Each home is allowed up to 2 replacement bags per week. You can put more than 2 bags out – but only 2 new bags will be provided. For heavy items a special collection can be arranged direct with WFC, but a charge will be made.
- Recyclable materials: you should have 2 green bags and a green box for collection of recyclables on alternate Mondays. One green bag is for paper/card, the other for plastics (but not plastic bags). The box is for glass, tins and clean aluminium foil. You should also have a Green Wheelie Bin for garden waste collected on alternate Wednesdays. Contact Westmorland and Furness Council on the phone line above or https://www.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/bins-recycling-and-street-cleaning/bin-collections
- Although there is a roadside collection we encourage you to use the recycling centre at the Memorial Hall. This provides an income towards the running costs of the hall. Items that can be recycled include Paper and Cardboard, bottles, tins and aerosols, clean foil, and clothes, but not plastics.
- The Council Refuse and Recycling Centre is at Flusco (near to Newbiggin off the A66 west of Penrith) and is open daily. No permit is required for domestic items. There is also a recycling Centre at Kirkby Stephen, behind the Coop.
